PHILIPPINE ASSOCIATION
OF MARINE SCIENCE
The Philippine Association of Marine Science (PAMS) carries the task of promoting growth in marine science in the country and recognizes the important role of Filipino scientists in furthering knowledge on tropical marine ecosystems. PAMS holds biennial national symposia, which are appropriate venues for marine science research to be shared and disseminated to a wider audience in order to improve resource management and conservation efforts.
15th
NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM
ON MARINE SCIENCE
Aklan State University, Banga, Aklan
4-6 July 2019
VIEW THE SUBMISSION & REGISTRATION PLATFORM It is with great pleasure and excitement that we, the Philippine Association of Marine Science Officers 2017-2019, cordially invite you to the 15th National Symposium in Marine Science to be held at the Aklan State University, Banga, Aklan on July 4-6, 2019 with the theme “Fostering synergy of science, community and governance for healthy seas.”
As PAMS continues to undertake the task of promoting growth in marine science in the country, the PAMS15 will focus on highlighting the complex people-sea relationship and look more closely on the ways by which we can address the growing issues and risks to food security, biodiversity, and community resilience. For this singular challenge, we invite you to be a member of PAMS as it aims to provide a venue for workers in marine science and allied areas of specialization to link and network among local and international institutions. This is envisioned to catalyze deeper collaboration vital to advancing knowledge on tropical marine and coastal ecosystems and applying trans-disciplinary action and advocacy to aid our ailing seas and coastal communities.
Join us on July 4-6, 2019 in Aklan and be part of the 15th National Symposium in Marine Science! Your participation as stakeholders for the agenda of synergy in science, governance and community for healthy seas are most welcome.
We look forward to seeing you and co-create closer partnerships with you for a successful PAMS15 and beyond!
Very truly yours,
Yasmin H. Primavera-Tirol
President, PAMS 15
(November 2018)
It is PAMS15's aim to emphasize that healthy seas provide us more benefits such as livelihood resources, food, genetic, cultural and aesthetic values. Sustaining these benefits entail harmony of people and the environment – understanding that the sea is finite and there is a need for good science to inform management at all levels of governance.
In line with this PAMS15's theme, the logo symbolizes the strategic cooperation between the scientific community and the different facets of the government to achieve wholesome and sustainable seas.
The lower half signifies the ocean while the upper half shows the diversity of marine life and their interconnectivity with food security and environmental resilience.
Each of the halves meet at the center forming a handshake embodying the common understanding of the government, private sector, NGOs, and especially the Filipino masses on the protection, management, and overall conservation of the oceans.
Lastly, the hues used also represent the colors of the sea at the break of dawn, signifying a new chapter for a more hopeful, scientific, and community-oriented future of the Philippine seas.

THE VENUE
Aklan is situated in the Western Visayas region. The province is famous for its natural beauty and rich culture, a remarkable place in the Philippines that has made a clear-cut mark in the world map when it comes to attracting tourists, particularly the Ati-atihan Festival.
Aklan is naturally endowed with 709 ha of primary forests within its 1,817 km2 total land area. Aklan’s coastline stretches about 155 km along its 11 coastal municipalities which include the mangroves of Ibajay and Kalibo, the unique estuaries of Batan and New Washington, the seagrass and corals of Tangalan and Malay, and the natural attractions of Boracay Island.
PAMS15 will be held at Aklan State University on July 2019. ASU is considered as one of the institutions of learning in Western Visayas, and envisioned to be an Academic Pillar of Excellence (APEx) for Sustainable Development. The ASU College of Fisheries and Marine Sciences is happy and excited to host the PAMS15, being aligned to its objectives on improved environment awareness and coastal resource rehabilitation.
